Counting Down the Days!

Things are going GREAT for our Dragon Hillclimb June 23-24 in Robbinsville, NC!

A few updates :

1. Entries are still coming from drivers and classes are filling up. We have 7 drivers competing in C Street Prepared class and 5 in Street Unlimited! We can still use a few more safety workers so if you are interested, please sign up as soon as possible. Workers receive a shirt, accommodations, breakfast and lunch both days and dinner Saturday night and will draw for prizes as well.

2. Lodging – if you are looking for a place to stay, there are still openings at :

Smoky Mountain Mansion    Call Beverly at  866-862-4220

Mountain Manor                 Call Brenda at 828 479-4555

3. Spectator area #2 will be open for the June event. This is halfway up the hill and will provide a good view of cars coming and going! Safety barricades will be in place and workers will be there to insure safety of spectators. The Spectator are # 3 at top of the hill will also be open. You can see cars finish there and drivers will come over to talk with spectators. It’s a great chance to talk, ask questions and get autographs. Each youth that gets 15 autographs gets a free inflatable dragon (see Information Desk at event for details!) Be sure and see the view at the overlook at Spectator Area #3… beautiful view of some Carolina Mountains. BRING YOUR CAMERA!

4.  Parking  – The Law Enforcement side of Forest Services reminded us again in our last meeting, ALL entrants and spectators MUST park outside of the white stripes. It is vitally important to keep the lanes free for all traffic.

5. The road work is finished and the course is significantly smoother! We appreciate the money spent by North Carolina Department of Transportation to improve this road. They focused mainly on turns and dips to help cars keep better asphalt adhesion and less bottoming out of springs. The course does have mixed surfaces but is a better course than last year. Remember, each hillclimb course has it’s own unique challenges and it has never meant smooth perfect asphalt to the top!

6. Local businesses in Robbinsville and Graham County have stepped up to sponsor cars and help our event! We appreciate their interest and support! The Chamber of Commerce has worked with local businessmen to cover worker meals and help make this event possible. One local auto shop has offered to help any driver that needs welding or major repairs during the weekend. This kind of teamwork is greatly appreciated and makes these events such a pleasure to share.

7. Media Passes – If you are working in media field, we will have media passes that will allow access to more of the course. You will need to sign a waiver, stay outside of armco barriers and stay in sight of a safety worker at all times.

WE CAN”T WAIT…. see you at the DRAGON HILLCLIMB! June 23-24

Chasing the Dragon Hillclimb III new date will be September 29-30!

Media – Article on the Dragon Hillclimb!

The Graham Star (local newspaper for Graham County) puts out a tourism guide each year. They gave SCCA – Central Carolinas Region a very nice article and the editor let us know they are looking forward to having us with them. Thanks to Cheri Brantley for her continued efforts to promote our event and get us publicity.

A Few Recent Updates from Robbinsville!

1. Road work is being completed on Maple Gap Road. We will be posting an update with pictures when it is done! A BIG thanks to Graham County and NC Department of Transportation for finding the funding to make the needed road improvements.

2. Local businesses have been working with the local Chamber of Commerce on a new Sponsorship program! For a small sponsor fee, a local business can have their name and logo on a car being raced at the hillclimb! If you would like to volunteer your car as a “sponsor car” please contact Ted Theodore at editor@thesoutherndriver.com  He will cover what that would require. Your help is greatly appreciated!

3. Lodging in the Robbinsville area is still available. We received word from these nice folks they have space and LOVE HILLCLIMBERS! In fact, Cathy’s husband John worked the hillclimb last year!

Cathy Cherrington – they have cabins available at Dragons Rest Cabins, LLC (828) 479-4726 dragonsrestcabins.com

Finding a place to stay at the Dragon? NO PROBLEM!

You will notice  we added a new tab in the top right corner of our webpage that reads : LODGING

There you will find listings for many sites in the Graham County area and many within a few miles of the hillclimb site.

Two things to note :

1. Be sure to look at location of possible lodging  in relation to the hillclimb site and the City of Robbinsville. The registration/tech, the classroom for novices, the Friday evening party and the Saturday night party will all be held downtown.

2. When you are making arrangements for your stay, PLEASE let the owners and managers know you are with the SCCA Hillclimb. This is really helpful in marketing and growth for our events.

We wish you good luck in finding the RIGHT place for you and your crew! The LODGING tab will take you to a page with the following areas :

I. MOTELS, LODGES, INNS, RESORTS

II. BED AND BREAKFASTS

III. VACATION RENTALS

IV. CAMPGROUNDS  (RV parks, primitive, etc.)

Dragon Hillclimb – NATIONAL Time Trial Event of the YEAR!!!

Central Carolina’s Region is proud to announce that Sports Car Club of America chose the CCR Chasing The Dragon Hillclimb as their National Time Trial Event of the Year! The award was presented at the Las Vegas Convention last month. CCR Board of Directors plan to make the two events at the Robbinsville, NC site even better than last year!

Ted Theodore – Hillclimb Manager stated “Hillclimbs are fun whether you are driving, working or spectating. The blend of racing, fellowship and good times at a site like the Nantahala Forest…it’s just a great combination you will not forget. We are expecting close to 100 drivers this year for our June 23-24 weekend. You will see everything from specials, open wheel formula cars, rally cars, production racers, and vintage cars. Come on out and join us for a GREAT event!”

Time to start studying the Dragon course!

The Chasing the Dragon Hillclimb is only a few months away (June 23-24) … and what better way to prepare than a NEW VIDEO!

This is a ride with Cory Friedman – our current King of the Hill in his 2009 Porsche GT3 Cup

Thanks to Cory and Autometrics Motorsports!

NEW DATE FOR THE DRAGON HILLCLIMB – June 23-24!

The May 5 & 6 dates that were planned for the Chasing the Dragon Hillclimb had to be changed. The Minis on the Gap were on the same weekend and accommodations were booked out from Fontana area to Robbinsville. That meant if the date was kept, our drivers, workers and spectators would be forced to stay further from the event and it would not help Robbinsville Tourism. Central Carolinas Region officers worked with Robbinsville and Graham County to find a better date for our event.

The Chasing the Dragon Hillclimb will be held JUNE 23-24!

The asphalt repairs will be finished by June 1st and the roads and guard rail areas will be trimmed and cleaned the Thursday before the event! We have some other surprises this year you will enjoy so make your plans now to attend. We are expecting double the drivers and double the spectators… this means you need to book your accommodations early as possible. The following link shows hotels/ motels and rentals available in the area.  (Be sure to press where it says “Click here” for campgrounds, hotels, resorts, etc.)  Please look closely at descriptions to be certain they are close to Santeetlah and Robbinsville areas. The rental rates for many of the cabins and chalet rentals are $125 to $175 per night and can sleep 6 to 8. We strongly recommend groups going in together on these deals!

NOTE : We will be taking care of courseworkers accomodations. We plan to put our workers up mostly at Microtel and will have a free  site at Rattler Ford Campground at the foot of the hillclimb site for those who wish to campout with tents on Santeetlah Lake.

The Friday night party AND the saturday night dinner will be held in Downtown Robbinsville this year! Thanks for being a part of the Hillclmb and SCCA!  We are looking forward to a GREAT event and seeing you … on the Dragon!
